Design Thinking Week 2 Reflection

2 weeks into the design thinking class and it still feels like a very strange class. I don’t mean that in a negative way at all, it’s just so different than any other class I’ve ever taken. Beginning with the formation of the desks, it’s a small thing to move them in a circle but it has a really big impact in viewing this class as less of a one sided lecture, and more as an active discussion involving us the students. I also really appreciate that this class isn’t just about constantly moving forward with work and doing this, but about getting into the right mindset by becoming mindful. It’s definitely important that we sorted out our biases and learned about empathy by observations because if we truly want to make the world a better place, we have to remember that that is a selfless thing to do so it’s important to try to keep ourselves out of the equation so we can make the greatest impact on others. It was really interesting reading the article from steelcase because it made me rethink Aristotle's quote “For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.” The article was all about how there are things in the environment that we can do to make a more creatively stimulating environment. For example, we can use bright colors to make it inspiring, make it messy to encourage thinking outside of the box, and support various posture so people are relaxed and comfortable.
